He describes his work as "reflective of culture and experiences, with a constant spiritual consciousness delivered in various forms." This work shows the connection between African Xhosa scarring traditions worked into the healing aspect of this design.
“My journeys inspire me; I know it well. This body of work expresses some of the layers of my own life that I am extremely grateful for. Beginning with my home, family and early life in South Africa.”
Andile is the founder of lmiso Ceramics and was born in the small village of Ngobozana near Qobo-Qobo in the Eastern Cape. In 1996 he enrolled at Sivuyile Technical College in Gugulethu, Cape Town to study art, he graduated top of his class. In 1999 he was offered employment at the Potters Shop and Studio, painting ceramics. He received a scholarship to further his studies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University where he enrolled for a Ceramic Design course and graduated successfully Cum Laude, receiving a National Diploma in Ceramic Design in 2003.
As a well traveled designer, he prides himself as being South African and presents it through his work at every
opportunity. Clay gives him the ability to create something beautiful, valuable, and usable with four elements of life:
Earth, Water, Air and Fire. Andile has been shown in exhibitions for museums and galleries including Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design at the Vitra Design Museum (2014), Graphic Africa at Habitat’s Platform Gallery (2013), Design Miami, Design Miami/ Basel, The Salon Art + Design, NY Now and the AKAA Art Fair.
We are proud to be not only representing his work here at ROAM Gallery, but to be friends with such an incredible artist.
